|CARL L. SAMUELSON
AVOCA-Carl L. Samuelson, 86, of Grant St., passed away early Saturday morning (Feb. 25, 2017) in the presence of his loving family at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, after a short illness.
Born in Wayland on Feb. 18, 1931 he was the eldest son of the late Carl and Dorothy (Colegrove) Samuelson. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his son, Dean Samuelson and his sister, Beverly Shaver.
A lifelong resident of Avoca, Carl was a graduate of Avoca Central School and attended Bob Jones University in South Carolina. While he was in high school he was a member of the baseball team and during one particular game team members and spectators were able to witness him make an un-assisted triple play.
Carl proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force 3560th Flight Line Maintenance & Periodic Squadron from 1950 to his honorable discharge in 1954 as Staff Sergeant.
He was employed at Westinghouse in Bath and retired from Philips Lighting as a machine attendant. Throughout the years he also was employed as a bus driver for Avoca Central School.
Carl was a long time and active member of the First Baptist Church in Avoca where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, sound system operator and custodian. Carl was also very active with the youth as a youth group leader and Sunday School teacher.
His loving family includes his wife of 64 years, the former JoAnn Larsen, who he married at the First Baptist Church of Avoca on Jan. 10, 1953; his two children, Carl Leonard “Sam” (Robin) Samuelson, Jr. of Boiling Springs, Pa. and Pamela (Joseph) Wakefield of Bath; his seven grandchildren, Adam (Lisa) Samuelson, Christopher (Leaphy) Samuelson, Shawn (Pattie) Wakefield, Cory (Phoebe) Samuelson, Jessica Wakefield, Carli Samuelson and Cody (Laurie) Wakefield; his 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Judy (Cubbie) Culbertson of Dansville; his brother, Larry (Judy) Samuelson of West Virginia; his sister-in-law, Geraldine Strobel of Bath; his brother-in-law, Richard (Ruth) Larsen of Avoca; also several nieces and nephews.
The Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St. in Avoca is honored to serve the family of Carl L. Samuelson.
Calling hours are 9-11 a.m. Saturday (March 4, 2017) at the First Baptist Church of Avoca where a funeral and committal service, with military honors, will be held following the calling hours at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Bill McFeaters and Pastor Brandon McAfee officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.
