HORNELL-Margaret A. Cannon, 92 , passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon (June 11, 2016) at her home on Platt St.
Born in Meadville, Pa. on May 25, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Helen A. (Maley) Scullion. On July 20, 1948, she was married in St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca to Edward J. Cannon, who predeceased her in 1981 after 33 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her infant sister, Mary Rita Scullion in 1922; her three other sisters and their spouses, Joanne Dolecki (Bernard) in 1964, Patricia Flanagan (Patrick) in 1997, Audrey Durphy (Duane) in 2015 and her brother, James Scullion in 2006.
A graduate of Salamanca High School, Margaret received her bachelor’s of art degree in 1945 from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. and her master’s degree in mathematics education in 1948 from St. Bonaventure University in Allegany. She completed additional graduate studies at Alfred University.
Margaret has resided in Hornell since 1963 and was employed by the Hornell City School District as a mathematics teacher at Hornell High School for 20 years, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She was also a member of the Ladies of Columbus; a member, past president and treasurer of the St. James Mercy Hospital Auxiliary; a member and past treasurer of the Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma: and a former member of the State Finance Committee and member of the State Bylaw Committee of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Her loving family includes her two daughters, Mary Ellen Cannon of Snyder and
Maureen (Mark) Kempski of Pittsford; her son, Thomas Cannon of Friendship; her two granddaughters, Caitlin and Kara Kempski; her sister-in-law, Marion Scullion of Marquette, Mich.; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
We are grateful for all of those who so lovingly cared for Margaret during her last years at home.

Calling hours are from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell or to the St. James Mercy Foundation, 411 Canisteo St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
