OWEN J. “MIKE” DUFFY



HORNELL-Owen J. “Mike” Duffy, 86, of Vincent St., passed away Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13, 2015) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Olean on July 1, 1929, he was a son of the late Owen F. and Catherine Rockwell Duffy. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his two sisters, Mary Gurnsey and Rita Criss Almeter and his two brothers, John Duffy and James Duffy

A graduate of Angelica Central School, Mike also attended Alfred State College and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to his honorable discharge in 1952.

He was formerly employed at the Sinclair Refinery in Wellsville and the Foster-Wheeler Energy Corp. in Dansville before he began his 33 year career with the Hornell Fire Dept., retiring as a captain.

Mike has resided in Hornell for most of his life and was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and most recently St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish. He was a life member of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250 and the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling, especially to Las Vegas.

His loving family includes his wife of 58 years, the former Joan Foreman, who he married in Angelica in 1957; his four children, Michael (Eleanor) Duffy of Hornell, Robert (Rolleen) Duffy of Fremont, Lorie Duffy of Bishopville and Susan Duffy of Hornell; his five grandchildren, Michael and Patrick Duffy and Anthony “Tony”, Nichole and Joseph; his two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Deanna; his sister, Ann (Richard) Osgood of Wellsboro, Pa.; his sister-in-law, June Duffy of Angelica; also his nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Owen J. Duffy.

Calling hours are 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Mike’s military service during the Korean War.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
