William Lee “Billy Bob” Manry

HORNELL-William Lee “Billy Bob” Manry, 70, passed away unexpectedly Sunday (Feb. 10, 2019) at his home on Wells Street.

Born in Hornell on Nov. 19, 1948, he was the son of the late William C. and Glenna Mae (Grimes) Manry.

A graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1966, Billy also attended Alfred State College.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from June of 1968 to his honorable discharge as a Lance Corporal in Feb. of 1970. Billy participated in the Southwest Asia War Games from Nov. of 1968 to Oct. 1969 with Charlie Battery 1s Battalion 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division.; and came in second. He was a member of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250 and the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell.

Throughout the years he was employed with the former Erie-Lackawanna Railroad as a foreman and also worked road construction for more than 30 years as a grade foreman with S.J. Groves and Lane Construction Companies; also Morrison-Knudsen and several other companies.

Billy enjoyed going to coffee shops in his later years and having conversations and doing crosswords. He also volunteered every Thanksgiving at Billy Schu’s Food Bar in Hornell, who provided free meals to area residents.

His loving family includes several aunts, uncles and awesome cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of William Lee “Billy Bob” Manry.

To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell on Thursday (March 7, 2019) from 11 a.m. to noon for a Time of Remembrance. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at 1 p.m. at Bath National Cemetery.

Billy suggested the courtesy of no flowers and requested memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Hornell High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 135, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
