HORNELL - Dorothy A. “Dotty” Harrington, 94, resident of Morgan Estates in Geneseo and formally of Cedar St, passed away Thursday evening (Nov. 15, 2018) at Elderwood of Hornell.
Born in Scranton, PA on Jan 5, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Mabel (Killian) and Joseph Strzempek. Her baptismal name was Dorota Strzempek. On Dec 31, 1947, she was married at Sacred Heart Church in Scranton, Pa to Joseph F. Harrington, who predeceased her in 1976 after 29 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her 2 sisters, Bernadette Ferrese and Alice Arvonio.
A graduate of Technical High School in Scranton, Pa., Dotty resided in Hornell since 1965.
She was employed by the former Marion Rohr in Hornell as a payroll clerk for nine years and retired in 1984 from Alfred-Almond Central School where she was a payroll clerk for five years.
Dotty was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Later, she became a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. Throughout the years she was a member and former trustee of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Ann No. 194, the Ladies of Columbus, the St. James Hospital Auxiliary and served as a volunteer at the Aquinas Gift Shop and also served as a volunteer at the Blood Drives for the American Red Cross.
Dotty was devoted to her children and grandchildren and particularly cherished the time she had with her young great-grandchildren. Dotty enthusiastically travelled in her retirement years with bus trips, a Rocky Mountain train trip, an Ireland Trip, trips to Hawaii, and recently trips to Florida to visit her daughters. She was a life-long NY Yankee Fan and attended games in NYC and Toronto. Dotty loved playing cards (500, Euchre) with her lady friends. She continued playing Euchre when residing at Morgan Estates or visiting her daughters in Florida. She also enjoyed spending her time playing golf and did this well in to her 80’s.
Dotty was an accomplished seamstress having made many of her children’s clothes in their youth; and she passed along those skills to her daughters. Even in recent years, she continued to make her crotchet kitchen towels for gifts to the family.
Her loving family includes her three children, Joseph (Cindie) Harrington of Canisteo, her two daughters Patricia (Gary Ford) of Florida and Dorothy (Robert) Boyd of Florida; her three grandchildren, Molly (Phil) Andrus, John Harrington, and Julie (Jason) Abbey; her 2 great-grandchildren Mallory Andrus and Jacob Abbey and her brother Joseph (Irene) Strempek of Summit, N.J.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
