HORNELL-Cheryl Bea Hammond, 69, of E. VanScoter Street, passed away Thursday afternoon (Aug. 16, 2018) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.
Born in Hornell on Aug. 27, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Sheldon and Helen (Congelli) Hammond. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her maternal and paternal grandparents, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1966, Cheryl also graduated from Alfred University in 1970, where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Omicron Sorority. She eventually continued her studies towards a master’s degree at Geneseo State College.
She was employed at Lockport Senior High School as a Secondary Education Teacher of English and Speech Communication and was also involved with directing plays. She was a resident of Lockport, N.Y. for 15 years, before she returned to Hornell to reside with her late aunt, Bea Congelli.
Cheryl was a voracious reader and while residing in Hornell she was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyal Church and later became a communicant of St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish.
Her loving family consists of several aunts and uncles, including, Francis Congelli of Cleveland, Ohio, Rosemary (Thomas) McCormick of Hornell and Dolores Kelley of Alfred; as well as several cousins.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to serve the family of Cheryl Bea Hammond.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2018). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Hornell High School Alumni Assoc., P.O. Box 135, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the church.
