Obituary

AUDRUS H. “AUDY” (HOOKER) FERGUSON

PENN YAN/HORNELL-Audrus H. “Audy” (Hooker) Ferguson, 91, of Penn Yan, passed away late Friday evening (April 13, 2018) at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan, after a short illness.

Born in Hornell on Aug. 19, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Doris (Charles) Hooker. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her sister, Anne Hoy; her nephew, Scott Clark and two brothers-in-law.

A graduate of Hornell High School, Audy received an associate’s degree from Cortland State College and a master’s degree from Brockport State College. She taught Physical Education and Health at various schools in Rochester. While teaching at the Pittsford-Sutherland High School she proudly coached the first All State Girls Basketball team; she retired in 1985 from the Pittsford School District. From 1982 to 2000 she also owned and operated Wild Goose T’s, a screen printing business in Canandaigua. During Desert Storm she made 1000’s of shirts; the proceeds from the sale of those shirts were donated to military families who were in need.

On Feb. 2, 1994 she was married in Lewiston, Maine to Jeremiah M. “Jere” Ferguson, a native of Hornell and her high school sweetheart. They were reunited after many years apart and rekindled their love and have known each other for 79 years. They resided in Auburn, Maine and Canandaigua Lake and have resided in Penn Yan for the past 10 years where they have enjoyed playing Bridge with their friends. Audy was instrumental in building a 45-foot sailboat so she and Jere could pursue her favorite sport of sailing; they sailed from Portland, Maine to Charleston, S.C. several times.

Audy loved the outdoors and would often spend time gardening and swimming; she also enjoyed bowling and was a very talented painter.

While residing in Hornell she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and was presently a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Penn Yan.

Her loving family includes her husband of 24 years, Jeremiah “Jere” Ferguson; her son, Gary (Annette) DeMay of Rochester; her daughter, Beth Wemple of Victor; her stepson, Jeremiah L. Ferguson and his wife, Sandra Donaldson of Lenox, Iowa; also, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Joyce Clark of Coopers Plains; as well as her nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Audrus H. “Audy” (Hooker) Ferguson.
