Obituary

Margaret Louise Leuze Tyner

AVOCA- Margaret Louise Leuze Tyner, 100, of Avoca passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday (Nov. 25, 2017) surrounded by her beloved family.

She was born in Clarendon, NY on July 18, 1917 to Mary and Joseph Leuze and lived in Holley, NY with her brothers, John, Walter, and Raymond until she married Vernon “Vern” A. Tyner of Parma Center on New Year’s Eve 1937. By the advent of World War II, Margaret and Vern were the proud parents of a daughter, Priscilla Ann. As so many women of her generation during this time period, Margaret entered the work force in the early 1940’s to help in the war effort. She worked in a munitions factory in Spencerport, NY until the birth of their second daughter, Tharan Jane “Janie”, and Vern’s draft notice forced her to return home full-time. All three of her brothers were already either overseas serving in the Army or patrolling the east coast with the Coast Guard when Vern left. For roughly two years Margaret was a single parent and often recollected how she had to budget every penny of the $100 she got each month from Vern’s Army pay. Thankfully, Vern and all three of her brothers returned home from war without any serious injuries. Margaret and Vern’s first son, Randall Franklin “Randy” was born after the war - part of the huge baby boom in the second half of the 1940’s. Four years later, they were blessed with a second son, David Walter “Dave”. Three of her four children survive her: Priscilla Beeman (Richard - deceased), Randy (Dianne) Tyner, and David (Giselle) Tyner. Tharan (Ralph) DeLeo predeceased Margaret in 2010.

Margaret and Vern resided in Parma Center until 1958 when they purchased Maple Hill Rest Home in Clyde, NY. There Margaret almost single-handedly took care of the residents providing them with home cooked meals, freshly baked cookies, immaculate accommodations and most importantly, compassionate care. At the same time, she was also raising her three younger children and being grandmother extraordinar to Priscilla’s growing family. Eventually Margaret and Vern would be grandparents to 12 grandchildren: Scott (Louise - deceased), Darcy (Chris), Doug, Amy, Karrie, Kris (Will), Joey, Rachael (Dan), Melinda, Eric (Anita), Tim (Autumn), and Leigh (Brandon). There are also 14 great grandchildren, 10 great, great grandchildren, two nieces, and two nephews.

In 1964 Margaret and Vern moved down to Avoca with their two youngest children and purchased a home in the village in late 1965. In 2009 Margaret became a widow when Vern passed away after nearly 72 years of marriage. Margaret remained very active her entire life and could have beaten anyone in a wheelchair race at the Steuben Centers, where she resided for the last year and a half of her life. Known for always having delicious cookies available on almost a daily basis and beautiful crochet work adorning her home as well as the homes of her family members, Margaret will be deeply missed. Her life exemplified the values she held most dear: love of God and family, hard work, honesty and integrity, and a deep belief that there is always hope. She often said, “You can never give up no matter how tough things are.” Knowing her was both an honor and a privilege.
