Dean R. Smith

HORNELL-Dean R. Smith, 57, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2017) at his home on Bennett Road in the Town of Howard.

Born in Hornell on June 13, 1960, he was a son of Merlin and Noritta (Kennell) Smith and has resided in the Town of Howard his entire life.

A graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1978, Deans began his career with the former M-K Corp. in Hornell and was presently employed at Alstom with a total of 31 years of service. He also owned and operated Top 2 Bottom Contracting and was at one time employed with the Moonlighters.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinist & Aerospace Workers Union where he served as President for about 10 years. He was also a member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club and was an honorary member of the North Hornell Fire Dept.

Dean especially loved to spend time with his family and also enjoyed hunting, shooting, and riding motorcycles.

His loving family includes his wife, the former Mary Rodbourn; his two children, Jeremy (Megan) Smith and Jennifer Smith all of Hornell; his grandson, Brandon Smith also of Hornell; his mother, Noritta Smith of Arkport; his twin brother, Dwight Smith of Arkport; his two other brothers, Douglas Smith of Arkport and Jack (Teresa) Smith of Virginia; his two sisters, Deborah (William) Saam of Fayetteville, N.C. and Dawn (Charles) Sutfin of Hornell; also his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Merlin Smith, his sister, Dianne Smith Kubiak and his sister-in-law, Mary Smith.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Dean R. Smith.

Calling hours are noon-3 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 13, 2017) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell, where a Celebration of Life and a Time of Remembrance will be held beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday. Immediately following everyone is invited to a luncheon at the Arkport American Legion. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Howard Cemetery.
