ARKPORT-Mary M. Smith, 55, of State Route 36, passed away early Saturday morning (June 24, 2017) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester from complications of surgery.
Born in Hornell on Feb. 3, 1962, she was a daughter of the late William and Marilyn (Muchler) Ahearn.
A former resident of Hornell, Mary was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1981 and has resided in Arkport for most of her life. At one time, she was employed for 15 years for the Arkport School District before she began her employment with Steuben County as a secretary in the Count Clerk’s office. Throughout the years she also owned a Grant writing business.
For 18 years she was an active member of the Arkport Fire Co. and held multiple positions including secretary and as a District Fire Commissioner. She was also a member and past president of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post Auxiliary and when her sons were young she also volunteered her time as a Den Leader for the Boy Scouts.
Mary was an avid reader who enjoyed making jewelry, flower gardening and collecting owl figurines, jewelry and pictures.
She will be remembered most of all for being a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who enjoyed her Sunday morning coffee time and especially loved the time she spent with her grandkids.
Her loving family includes her husband of nearly 36 years, Dwight, who she married in Hornell on July 18, 1981; her two sons, Jason (Kari) Smith of Canisteo and Nathan (Lauren) Smith of Dansville; her five grandchildren, Ethan, Bradyn, Kendall, Logan, and a granddaughter to be born soon; also, her two brothers, Bill (Kathy) Ahearn of West Henrietta and Kevin (Leslie) Ahearn of Carlin, Nev.; her sister, Beth Smith of Arkport; as well as her nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles cousins and friends.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Mary M. Smith.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. (Ladies Auxiliary of the Arkport American Legion Post will conduct a memorial service at 6:45 p.m.) Thursday (June 29, 2017) and 10 a.m.-noon Friday (June 30, 2017) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. where a funeral service will be held in her memory following calling hours at noon Friday, with Pastor Jason Shambach officiating. After the service everyone is invited to the Arkport American Legion Post for a luncheon so that memories and stories of Mary can continue to be shared.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post Auxiliary, 1 Carter St., Arkport or to the Arkport Fire Co., P.O. Box 3, Arkport, N.Y. 14807. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
